ELBOW ROOM

DARK HOLLOW
This tune is a musical tribute to Bluegrass music. I remember the first time I heard Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys Playing on the steps of the courthouse when I was a little boy. I asked my father” What was that?”, He said “That's Bluegrass music.” And, I haven't been the same since.
Dennis White-guitar, vocal
Jerry Nettuno-mandolin
Nancy Padilla-fiddle
Ray Padilla-bass
Joe Rockafellow-banjo, tenor vocal

THE WISHING WELL BLUES
This is a Marshall Willborn tune I learned while on the bluegrass trail playing with Special Concensus Bluegrass Band in the early 80's. I sing and play it as I remembere d it. It never fails to bring a tear to my eye.
Dennis white-guitar, mandolin, vocal
Jean Ballhorn-fiddle
Linda Hausler-harmony vocal
Reeves Petroff-resophonic guitar
Rick Veeh-bass

LAUGHIN'MAN
This is a square dance tune that I wrote in Montana before the turn of the century. (I wrote it on my birthday in 1997). It had a different name to begin with . But he first time I played it with an ensemble, the second half reminded me of a man laughing and I changed its name at that time. For all you square dance callers out there, it works well as the dune for a dance called Cheater's Square.
Dennis White-clawhammer banjo, guitar
Jean Ballhorn-fiddle
Hallie Rugheimer-accordion
Michael Blessing-keyboard, bass

FIFTY MILES OF ELBOW ROOM
I first heard this tune while I was doing field recordings outside of Wise, Virginia during my college years. This tune was made popular by the Carder Family and every time I hear this tune I think of Hiltons, VA and of the privilege I had to sing it with Joe and Jeannette Carter. (A.P. and Sara's children). It brings the hair up on the back of my neck.
Dennis White-guitar,vocal
Craig Hall-mandola
Joe Rockafellow-harmony vocal
Kenny Williams-bass

CLOSE THE DOOR LIGHTLY
This is an Eric Anderson tune from the early '60s that I always thought could be played with a bluegrass band.
Dennis White-mandolin, mandola
Linda Hausler-harmony, vocal
Nancy Padilla-fiddle
Reeves Petroff-resophonic guitar
Joe Rockafellow-bluegrass banjo
Kenny Williams-bass

CHRISTUMA
This is the only title I have for this tune. It's a huapongo, a Brazilian dance where the band would play the tune for 20 minutes at a time. I learned it from J.P. Fraley, the notorious Kentucky fiddler, who learned it from the streets of Brazil. I used to play guitar with him on this tune and every time I hear this production in my head.
Dennis White-frailing banjo
Craig hall-lead, harmony guitar
Reeves Petroff-resophonic guitar
Hallie Rugheimer-accordion
Kelly Roberty-bass

SKIPPIN' IN THE MISSISSIPPI DEW
One of my many favorite John Hartford tunes. I always thought this tune could be played with the frailin' banjo. If you listen closely, you can hear the steam from the riverboat as it passes by.
Dennis White-guitar, vocal
Jean Ballhorn,-fiddle
“Dobro” Dick Diloff-plucked but string banjo, jews harp

PRAIRIE LULLABY
One of my all-time favorite Jimmy Rodgers tunes. I tried to capture the lonesome feeling that t nightrider might feel sitting on the back of his horse overlooking the prairie watching his herd. Check out the Hawaiian guitar on this cut.
Dennis White-gut string banjo
“Dobro” Dick Diloff-Wesenborn Hawaiian guitar, concertina
Nancy Padilla-fiddle
Kenny Williams-bass

POSSUM TROT
This is a tune I wrote on my way to North Carolina in 1977. Thanks to the gut string Farland banjo and the percussion. I imagine this tune being played by early black musicians in the South.
Dennis White-guitar,vocal
Neil Brock-bones
Michael Blessing-hand drums

TRUE LOVE
Changing gears on ya' here. This Pat Alger tune has the greatest first line, but also other lyrical turns and twists. That's what attracted me to this song.
Dennis White-guitar, vocal
Michael Blessing-congas
Craig Hall-harmony guitar
Reeves Petroff - resophonic guitar
Kenny Williams-bass

WAY DOWN IN DIXIELAND
An original tune written as I drive north to Chicago, in the middle of the night seeing the lights of the big city for the first time.
Dennis White-guitar, vocal
Jerry Nettuno-mandolin
Nancy Padilla-fiddle
Ray Padilla-bass
Joe Rockafellow-banjo, tenor vocal

SANDY BOYS
This tune takes me back to my childhood in North Carolina. The twin fiddles screamin' till all hours of the night accompanied by a solo banjo send memories of visits with my relatives to Tommy Jarrell's house, the Union Grove Fiddler's Convention and the Round Peak music of Surry County.
Dennis White-clawhammer banjo
Sally O' Neil -fiddle
Steve O' Neil - fiddle
